Invisalign and your oral health, from Dr. Stein

When considering treatment options in Palm Harbor and New Port Richey, patients often ask us how Invisalign treatment is so different than traditional braces. Well, there are more reasons to smile about Invisalign with Braces by Stein than you may know. Invisalign is a series of removable aligners that are nearly invisible, and besides straightening your teeth, can improve your oral health. Here’s how:

Healthy gums: Straight teeth allow a close fit for gums. This lessens the gum stress that is caused by crowded or widely spaced teeth, thus also reducing red and swollen gums.

Easy cleaning: Invisalign is removable, therefore brushing and flossing is easier and you are able to maintain a healthy mouth. These habits are vital to avoiding tooth decay, plaque and even gum disease.

Improved speech and chewing: Properly-aligned teeth don’t have the discomfort or compound speech impediments that can be caused by crowded teeth or a deteriorating jawbone.

If you have any questions about Invisalign, please give us a call for a free Orthodontic consultation. In fact, if you begin treatment by Dec. 31, we will reduce your treatment by $300.

Have a great weekend!

Dr. Stein & team, honoring our veterans

Happy Veteran's Day! We would like to take this opportunity to thank all the veterans and those currently on active duty who have put their lives on the line for the freedoms we all enjoy.

In celebration of Veteran’s Day, Dr. Jeffrey Stein and our entire team at Braces by Stein would like to share a few fun facts about our flag, our national holiday, and our country’s history!

-Veteran's Day, a day that was originally called Armistice Day, is a time to thank and honor the men and women who have served in our military.

- President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the official legislation for Veteran's Day on June 1, 1954, changing the name of the holiday from Armistice Day to Veteran's Day

-There are 23.2 million veterans in the U.S.

-The flag was first approved by Congress on June 14, 1777

-Each of the flag’s colors signify different American values - red is for valor and zeal, white is for hope, purity, and cleanliness of life, and blue is for heaven, loyalty, sincerity, justice, and truth

-Research by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) helped develop the CAT Scan, the cardiac pacemaker, and the “Seattle Foot” to give those hurt the ability to run and jump

-When the flag is displayed next to another flag against a wall, the U.S. flag should be on its own right (on the left side when facing the wall).

-Veteran's Day is often confused with Memorial Day. Memorial Day is a time for remembering and honoring the men and women who died while serving our country, or as a result of injuries that incurred in battle. Veteran's Day honors and gives thanks to all veterans who served in our military.

-There are five states with over 1 million veterans in their population – California, Florida, Texas, New York and Pennsylvania.

Thanks again to our veterans! We are so thankful for all who have and are currently serving in the U.S. and abroad.

Hey Dr. Stein! What's Invisalign, and is it right for me? [Video]

We've blogged about Invisalign before, but today thought we'd share a helpful video for those who are intrigued by the idea of straightening their teeth without using traditional metal braces. The Invisalign system at Braces by Stein is a state-of-the-art system of clear, removable aligners that we proudly offer to adults and teens at our convenient Palm Harbor and New Port Richey offices. We have plenty of resources on our website to check out about Invisalign, or give our office a call for a personal consultation to learn if this revolutionary new treatment option is right for you!

Not only are the aligners invisible, they are removable, so you can eat and drink what you want while in treatment. Plus, brushing and flossing are no problem. They are also comfortable, with no metal to cause mouth abrasions during treatment. And no metal and wires usually means you spend less time in our office getting adjustments. Dr. Jeffrey Stein is a Certified Invisalign® Provider in Palm Harbor & New Port Richey, Florida.

Lastly, for those of you already wearing braces, Dr. Stein and our team want you to steer clear of gummy, sticky, nutty or chewy candy this Halloween!

Monday, October 18, 2010

Ask Dr. Stein: What's the deal with Halloween candy?

All those sweet, sour and sticky candies may taste great this Halloween season, but these treats can damage your teeth - and braces too! Did you know sour candies can be acidic to your teeth, and actually wear down the enamel that protects them? This can cause tooth decay and cavities! After eating these candies, be sure to wash your mouth out with water, drink milk or eat a few slices of cheese. These will help neutralize the acid in your mouth (wait at least one hour before brushing your teeth with toothpaste, as this can actually increase the effects of acid on your teeth)

Instead of all that unhealthy candy, try any of these delicious and braces-friendly Halloween recipes, courtesy of the American Association of Orthodontists! Have a great week!

At Braces by Stein, October is National Orthodontic Health Month!

With October being National Orthodontic Health Month, our staff at Braces by Stein thought we'd remind Dr. Stein's patients to be careful when they bite into their treats this month.

Remember, caramels, taffy, nuts, bubble gum, popcorn kernels and suckers are some of the foods you should be avoiding this Halloween Season! Indulging in these foods can break your braces and lengthen your treatment time at Braces by Stein!

Of course, Halloween doesn’t have to be completely treat-less. The American Association of Orthodontists have provided a helpful list of tips and braces-friendly recipes for you to chew on.

Lastly, Refer a friend who starts orthodontic treatment from today until November 1st, and you'll receive 2 Tickets to Busch Gardens Howl-o-Scream for you and the friend you referred! Ask us for more info!

Whether you’ve just come in for a consultation or your family has been visiting our office for years, we’d love to hear your feedback. You can write a review on our Facebook page or on our Google listing!

Ask Dr. Stein: Why are straight teeth so important?

Some people wonder why Dr. Jeffrey Stein and our staff work so hard to give our patients straight teeth. Of course it’s nice to have a smile full of evenly aligned teeth, but did you know that straightening your teeth can keep them healthier? Straight teeth lead to better oral hygiene, increasing your chances of keeping your own natural teeth for a lifetime.

As one of the best orthodontists in Palm Harbor and New Port Richey, Florida, Dr. Stein will tell you straight teeth are less prone to decay because they collect less plaque – the sticky colorless substance that forms on our teeth and leads to tooth decay; and they are easier to keep clean!

If you’re wondering whether your teeth might cause problems because they are out of alignment, give us a call at to set up a consultation. Dr. Stein can help you decide whether or not you will benefit from orthodontic treatment.

Dr. Stein shares 10 tips to keep your braces sparklin' clean

Keeping your teeth clean is more important than ever when you have braces, says Dr. Jeffrey Stein. Food bits have more spots than usual to hide in your mouth, so you must be diligent in order to avoid bad breath, swollen gums, discolored teeth and cavities. If you remove plaque regularly during treatment, you'll experience better results and shorter treatment time. Keep plaque at bay with these top ten tips:

1. One tooth at a time. When you brush, take time with each individual tooth – at least 10 seconds each – and pay careful attention to the spots where your teeth touch your braces.

2. It’s all about the angles. Brush the tops of your teeth and braces with your brush angled down toward where they meet. Brush the bottoms of your teeth and braces with your brush angled up.

3. The tooth, the whole tooth, nothing but the tooth. While the front surface of your teeth may seem like the most logical to clean, it’s equally important to clean the inner surface of your teeth (tongue side) as well as the chewing surface. And be sure to clean along your gum line – a key spot for plaque buildup.

4. Step 1: eat, step 2: clean. While you’re in treatment, it’s important to brush after every meal. Bits of food can easily get caught between braces and teeth, and these food bits interact with bacteria in your mouth to cause decay. The longer food is in contact with your teeth, the greater opportunity for plaque to form. If you are eating somewhere that you can’t brush, thoroughly rinse your mouth with water.

5. Like a Boy Scout, always be prepared. The easiest way to be sure you can brush after every meal is to get in the habit of taking a toothbrush, toothpaste and floss with you wherever you go. Designate a special container just for your teeth-cleaning tools and keep it in your purse, backpack, or laptop case.

6. Remove the moving parts. If you have elastic bands or headgear, remove these parts before you brush or floss.

7. Fluoride is your friend. Fluoride helps prevent cavities. Be sure to brush with fluoride toothpaste, and rinse with fluoride mouthwash.

8. Pointy brushes reach tiny places. Interproximal brushes (sometimes called proxa brushes or interdental brushes) are cone-shaped and come in very handy for reaching spots around your braces that standard brushes can’t.

9. Find the floss for you. Regular floss works for some patients, but others find it easier to work with a floss threader, which helps you get the floss into tight places. Other patients like an all-in-one product called Superfloss, which comes with a stiff end for easy threading, a spongy section for cleaning wide spaces, and regular floss for narrow spaces.

10. Make time for the pros. It’s your job to take care of the everyday cleaning. But make sure to visit your dentist regularly while in treatment, to get the deep, thorough cleaning that only a professional can provide. If you need help finding the right Dentist for you, feel free to contact our office - we’d love to help!

Have a fantastic three-day weekend!

The importance of regular checkups, from Dr. Stein

Dr. Stein wants to know: Are you brushing your teeth twice a day during your treatment this summer? If the answer is yes, that’s wonderful! But, don’t forget that it’s also important for you to visit your dentist every six months in addition to brushing your teeth and flossing (and visiting our New Port Richey or Palm Harbor office, of course). Regular dental checkups, after all, are important for maintaining good oral health.

Your general dentist can check for problems that might not be seen or felt, detect cavities and early signs of decay, treat oral health problems early and show you how to properly brush and floss your teeth. During an oral exam your dentist can check the health of your mouth, teeth, gums, cheeks and tongue. Checkups will also include a thorough teeth cleaning and polishing. If you have not been to the dentist in the last six months, let Dr. Stein know during your next visit and we will provide a few great local references!

- The stars on the original American flag were arranged in a circle to ensure that all colonies were equal.

- Someone who specializes in the history of flags is called a vexillologist.

- The word ‘patriotism’ comes from the Latin patria, which means ‘homeland’ or ‘fatherland.’

- According to the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council, Americans consume over 150 million hot dogs during their Independence Day festivities.

- Speaking of food, there's a 1-in-6 chance the beef on your backyard grill came from Texas. The Lone Star State is America's leader in the production of cattle and calves.

Pasta pomodorini, a delicious and braces-friendly summer recipe!

Summer is finally here, and that means it’s time for some refreshing recipes! Our friends at the American Association of Orthodontists made an appetizing (and braces-friendly!) summer dish that is sure to delight during the long, hot summer days. Palm Harbor and New Port Richey, Florida orthodontist Dr. Jeffrey Stein wants you to remember that a healthy diet provides essential nutrients and helps you achieve the best possible result from your orthodontic treatment at Braces by Stein.

Pasta Pomodorini

Ingredients:
• ¾ pound spaghetti or spaghetti
• ¼ cup extra-virgin olive oil, plus more for drizzling
• ¼ cup sliced garlic
• ½ teaspoon finely minced Calabrian chilies, or 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes
• 1 pint small cherry tomatoes, stems removed, crushed between your thumb and forefinger
• Sea salt, preferably gray salt
• ½ cup fresh basil leaves, each torn into 2 or 3 pieces
• Wedge of Parmesan cheese

Directions

Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil over high heat. Add the pasta. While the pasta cooks, heat the 1/4 cup olive oil in a large skillet over moderate heat. Add the garlic and cook until the slivers are golden brown and crisp, then add the chilies and cook for about 30 seconds. Raise the heat to high and add the tomatoes. Simmer briskly to soften the tomatoes and thicken the juices, about 3 minutes. Season with salt.

When the pasta is al dente, scoop out about 1/2 cup of the pasta cooking water, then drain the pasta. Return the pasta to the warm pot off the heat. Add the sauce and the basil and mix well. Add some of the reserved cooking water if the pasta seems dry. Transfer to a warmed serving bowl and grate Parmesan over the top to taste. Drizzle with a little more olive oil. Serve immediately. Makes 4 servings.

Enjoy this great summer dish and have a great rest of the week!

Dr. Stein wants to know: what's on your summer reading list?

Traveling this summer? Heading on a camping trip? Lying on a hammock resting in your backyard? With summer only weeks away, some of us at Dr. Stein's office have been thinking increasingly about the importance of reading.

Sure it’s easier to go play ball or lie back and watch some TV, but Dr. Jeffrey Stein will tell you that reading during the summer is a vital step in being prepared for classes in the fall and maintaining your skill level.

Out of ideas for great summer reads? Ask us for suggestions, and our staff (and Dr. Stein) would be happy to provide a few titles. You may also ask a local librarian here in Palm Harbor or New Port Richey for some ideas or check out some summer reading lists we came across recently.

Dairy and gum disease, from Dr. Stein

As the days get longer and the temperatures begin to climb a bit here in Florida, Dr. Stein knows there’s nothing more refreshing than getting some ice cream, a milk shake or a glass of cold milk to cool off. June is National Dairy Month and a great time for Dr. Stein and our staff to remind you that dairy foods should be a part of your overall diet.

After all, a 2008 study found that regular consumption of dairy products, such as milk, cheese and yogurt, can actually lower your chances of contracting periodontal disease (also known as gum disease). Results of the study also showed that adults who consume at least 55 grams of lactic acid a day are less at risk for gum disease.

Gum disease is caused by a bacterial infection in the mouth that affects the gums and jaw. Gum disease results in a loss of teeth and bone, and has been connected to certain cases of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, respiratory disease and osteoporosis. Dr. Stein will tell you eating dairy is not just healthy for building strong bones, but is essential for maintaining a strong, healthy mouth.

For more information about which dairy foods are best for keeping your teeth healthy, please give us a call at Braces by Stein. Enjoy the weekend everyone!

Dr. Stein, reminding you Mother's Day is around the corner!

Dr. Stein
and team thought we'd remind our wonderful patients that this coming Sunday (May 9) is Mother's Day, a special day for all of us. "Hey, Dr. Stein! When should my kid come in for a visit?"

Many parents in New Port Richey and Palm Harbor assume they must wait until a child has all of his or her permanent teeth to visit Dr. Stein, only to find that treatment would have been much easier if started sooner. Some orthodontic problems are easier to correct while the jaw is still growing. Consequently, the American Association of Orthodontists recommends that every child have an orthodontic check-up no later than age seven.

That's right - you read that correctly: age seven.

So, what’s so great about age seven, you ask? Enough permanent teeth have arrived for Dr. Stein to make a determination about whether any problems are present. The first molars have come in, providing an opportunity to check for malocclusion, or what Dr. Stein calls “bad bite.” Also, the incisors have begun to come in, and problems such as crowding, deep bites and open bites can be detected.

Orthodontic evaluation at an early age provides at least two positive outcomes for our young patients: For some, early identification or problems will lead to easier or shorter orthodontic treatment in the future. For others, a healthy prognosis will provide immediate peace of mind.

Early evaluation, of course, may signal a need for early treatment. For some children, early treatment can prevent physical and emotional trauma. Aside from years of harmful teasing, misaligned teeth are also prone to injury and detrimental to good oral hygiene. So if your child is nearing age seven, give us a call to schedule an appointment.

10 Facebook tips for parents

We know many parents tend to sign up for Facebook accounts and ‘friend’ their kids, often as a way to keep an eye on their online activities. But then what? Most parents in this digital age are still lost when it comes to monitoring their kids online.

Last fall, parenting author Vicki Courtney wrote a helpful post on the things parents should and shouldn’t do while on Facebook. Dr. Stein and our team thought you might benefit from reading Vicki’s interesting piece.

Here is the list of the Top Ten Facebook No-Nos for Parents, designed specifically for those moms and dads who aren’t sure whether they’ve crossed the line in monitoring their kids’ presence online.

We hope you find this article informational. Please let us know what you think!

Play it safe this spring, from Dr. Jeffrey Stein

Nearly 60,000 people injure their faces annually while participating in sports activities, and teenagers account for 80 percent of all sports-related trips to the emergency room. And for Dr. Stein and team, that's simply not acceptable.

You see, April happens to be National Facial Protection Month, and it’s a good time to remind our young athletes about staying safe on the field this spring. The above video from our friends at the American Association of Orthodontists outlines some basic ways you can save face this April and spring.

Dr. Stein will tell you protective gear is vital for anyone engaging in tooth or mouth-threatening activities. If you have any further questions about any of these AAO tips, please contact our office. Have a great weekend!

Retainers, retainers, retainers...

If you recently completed treatment with Dr. Jeffrey Stein, our professional team would like to congratulate you! Now that your braces have been removed, Dr. Stein will provide—or has provided you—with retainers. After braces are removed, teeth can shift out of position if they are not stabilized.

Retainers provide that stabilization. They are designed to hold teeth in their corrected, ideal positions until the bones and gums adapt to the treatment changes, Dr. Stein says. Wearing retainers exactly as instructed is the best insurance that the treatment improvements last for a lifetime.

If you have additional questions about retainers or your treatment with Dr. Stein, please give us a call. Have a great weekend!

Ask Dr. Stein: Am I too old for orthodontic treatment?

Recently, our staff at Braces by Stein read a fascinating statistic: adults getting braces has jumped 24 percent since 1996! In fact, did you know one of every five patients in orthodontic treatment is over the age of 21?

In an age—and society—where looks matter as much as anything, and at a time when evenly-aligned teeth might be the difference between getting a job or a promotion, adults are choosing to invest in orthodontics. While orthodontic treatment is often associated with teens, adult orthodontics and braces at our Palm Harbor and New Port Richey offices can achieve amazing results for adult patients. With treatments such as Invisalign®, you can have your teeth straightened less noticeably. Orthodontic treatment at Braces by Stein can be successful at any age, and Dr. Jeffrey Stein knows adults especially appreciate the benefits of a beautiful smile.

If you’ve been thinking about getting that perfect smile, Dr. Stein and our entire team would love to have you visit for a consultation. Give us a call to set one up!

The social media adventure, with Dr. Jeffrey Stein

Isn’t social media great? Dr. Jeffrey Stein and team love connecting with our patients online, whether it’s by sharing news on our blog or communicating ideas on our interactive Facebook fan page. Dr. Jeffrey Stein, supporting National Children’s Dental Health Month

February may almost be over, but did you know this happens to be National Children’s Dental Health Month? Each February for the past 60 years, the American Dental Association (ADA) sponsors National Children's Dental Health Month to raise awareness about the importance of oral health. Developing good habits at an early age and scheduling regular dental visits helps children get a good start on a lifetime of healthy teeth and gums.

For kids wearing braces, brushing and flossing can become more difficult, requiring extra time and vigilance to remove food particles that accumulate on and between the teeth and in braces. New options for braces such as Invisalign Teen, which is removable, make it easier for kids to maintain good oral health during orthodontic treatment.

If the health of your teeth is ignored during treatment with braces, the results can be significantly compromised. Dr. Jeffrey Stein is available and happy to explain why effective brushing and flossing is one of the most critical actions needed from patients during orthodontic treatment. Have you visited us lately? Give us a call and schedule an appointment!

Talking mouth guards, orthodontics and sports with Dr. Stein

Wouldn’t you believe it, it’s almost springtime! The spring months, however, bring an increase in outdoor activities and a greater chance of damaging your precious mouth and pearly whites. If you play sports, it's important that you consult Dr. Stein for special precautions. A protective mouth guard is advised for playing spring sports such as baseball and soccer. Be sure to avoid mouth guards that custom form to your teeth as these will resist any tooth movements Dr. Stein and our team are trying to achieve. In case of any accident involving the face, check your mouth and the appliances immediately. If teeth are loosened or the appliances damaged, please schedule an appointment with our office. And don’t forget to ask us—Dr. Stein may recommend the best mouth guard for you.

Only by using a mouth guard and other forms of facial protection can kids with and without braces avoid serious sports injuries. Please give us a call if you have any questions about mouth guards or your treatment at the office of Jeffrey M. Stein.

Toothbrush Trivia with Dr. Stein!

People have been brushing their teeth for thousands of years! In fact, the first “toothbrush” was created around 3000BC! Ancient civilizations used a thin twig with a frayed edge to rub against their teeth for cleaning.

The first toothbrush with bristles – similar to today’s toothbrushes – was invented in 1498 in China. Brushes were made out of bone or bamboo with bristles made from the hairs on the back of a hog’s neck.

It wasn’t until 1938 that the first nylon bristle toothbrush was introduced and people quickly became aware of practicing good oral hygiene.

Here are some other interesting facts about your toothbrush (and toothpaste):

• Most people are said to use blue toothbrushes over any other color
• The first toothpaste was used in 500 BC in China and India
• On average, children smile about 400 times per day
• Your toothbrush should be replaced every two months
• The first known toothpaste was used in 1780, Crest was introduced in the US in 1955 and Colgate in 1873

Invisalign® Tips, from Dr. Jeffrey Stein

We've blogged about the advantage of Invisalign treatment at Braces by Stein in the past. Today, we thought we'd share a few Invisalign tips with you. When wearing your Invisalign aligners, Dr. Stein wants you to ask yourself three questions.

1. Am I eating with my aligners on? - These aligners are removable and should be taken out when you eat.
2. Am I drinking anything other than water with my aligners on? - Though it's not a necessity for you to take out your aligners while you drink, think about how sticky a soda is. If you take out your aligners when drinking a soda, you have a better chance of keeping your aligners clean.
3. Am I brushing before putting the trays on? - The aligners have both an inside and outside. Keeping the outside clean is easy. Keeping the inside clean is also easy: just make sure you've brushed your teeth before putting the trays on.

These are all very simple steps, and ultimately, they help to keep you building good oral habits, Dr. Stein says. If you have any questions about Invisalign or your treatment here at Braces by Stein, please don't hesitate to give us a call!
